As the first female photojournalist to work for a daily Italian newspaper, Letizia Battaglia originally planned to capture ordinary sights and sounds in her home country of Sicily. But after witnessing her first brutal murder, she changed course, risking her life to immortalise the traces left by the Cosa Nostra Mafia in Palermo, laying bare the vibrant hues of bloodshed and the sharp, raw edges of grief.
